Automatic Competition Entry Services - What Are the Benefits?
Most competition enthusiasts spend many hours on-line keying their details into entry forms online, but even though there are enthusiast communities and message boards, there's no denying that this can be a repetitive and tedious task.
Although form filling software can speed things up a little, this is no replacement for a competent, professional entry service, that will do all of the work for you, and never get bored or miss a closing date.
Automatic competition entry has been around for some time, but has suffered with a poor reputation from some unscrupulous operators who simply spam contest providers with hundreds of identical entries at once. But the benefits are clear - you wouldn't go back to a hand washboard, when a washing machine can do the job better in a fraction of the time would you?
So what's stopping you signing up? We've heard the following reasons:
1. Why pay? - I could enter myself for nothing.
That's true, you could enter competitions in your free time, but that time isn't really free. Why not? Well, it's all to do with what's known as 'Opportunity Cost'. That's the the money you lose when you could have done something that would have made you more For example, if you spend just one hour a day entering competitions, when you could have been working then that's £6 you've lost (based on the UK minimum wage). And remember, that's the minimum, it doesn't include the cost of power, heat, light, your computer or your internet connection. With an automatic entry service, you just have your subscription to pay, and you have your free time available to spend with family and friends.
2. I don't think anyone really wins this way.
Yes they really do - every competition entry site will have a winners page, and any site that didn't produce winners would soon fold as most new members come through recommendations. Obviously luck plays a part, just as it does when you enter your own details, but reputable sites will list their winners and make winner's emails available for inspection. Look for sites that list proper names and locations; 'Mr X.Y.Z from England' doesn't inspire confidence. Automatic entry sites rely on the goodwill of winners to let them know about their wins, so you can be sure that the wins you see represent just a fraction of the total wins generated.
3. I won't know what I've been entered for.
A good competition entry service will provide a subscriber's login page so that each subscriber can find out exactly what they've been entered for. This should be updated in real-time and show the date and time of each entry. You should be able to choose the types of prize you want and the location of any domestic holidays so you can decide whether you are prepared to travel.
A really good competition service will back this up with regular statements, so every member will have a complete record of their entry history, plus you'll have entry confirmations in your competition email account to check at your leisure.
4. I'll get too many spam emails.
A professional automatic entry service will be able to separate legitimate competitions from fly-by-night sites harvesting address details, and will always check the 'Don't send me more information' button where possible.
The best ones will set up new email accounts specifically for your competitions so that your regular mailbox is not filled with marketing emails.
5. They don't enter that many competitions.
That may be true for some of the more basic services, you should always check to see how many entries you should expect.
Remember that even competitions for small prizes attract thousands of entries, so a good competition entry service needs to make thousands of entries for you in order to give your entry a reasonable chance of being drawn.

Top 10 Horse Racing Sites
For the horse racing enthusiast or someone new to the sport, I offer up my top ten horse racing web sites. The list does not include wagering platforms, pure handicapping sites, or blogs. These horse racing sites revolve around news pertaining to the sport, offer up an interactive experience, and/or provide participation in contests. Drum roll please.
1) Road to the Roses (roadtotheroses.com). This site usually starts up in mid to late February of each given year and runs until the first Saturday in May. You know what day that is; The Kentucky Derby. It is a great interactive site where you assemble your own stable of horses on their path to the most exciting two minutes in sports. Thousands of people participate every year in the hopes of winning valuable prizes.
2) Horse Racing Nation (horseracingnation.com). This is a relatively new site. It is a great site that offers you the opportunity to design your own silks. As a participant at this site you are allowed to demonstrate your handicapping prowess as well as comment on other participants handicapping selections. The site has news, links to some of the best thoroughbred blogs, videos of key races, and other valuable information. These guys are doing it right!
3) Daily Racing Form (drf.com). The online version of the oldest horse racing publication in North America. It contains the best news and handicapping information. Drf publishes entries and results for all thoroughbred and quarter horse races in North America. A wonderful feature is the "Race of the Day" where you can download past performances for free. The offer all kinds of handicapping information from books to race cards for sale. Beautiful site with a wealth of information.
4) Case the Race (casetherace.com). Great site. Has a wonderful free contest that provides you with the opportunity to make selections at various pre-determined races. It provides you with your own metrics vis a vis contest points and virtual money won. Then it ranks among the other participants in the contest. For each race it provides you with its power rankings based on a proprietary scientific formula. Other handicappers from across the country offer up their selections for Saturday races. This an enjoyable site. I include it in the list because of the interactive contest.
5) Blood Horse (bloodhorse.com). Fabulous information packed site. Contains all kinds of video shows about trainers, jockeys, and horses. Also provides video for "That Handicapping Show" which always very informative. Great tidbits of information regarding all manner of the horse racing business.
6) National Thoroughbred Racing Association (ntra.com). They have a very well done web site. It covers a lot of news and information about the sport. Has links to other sites with contests and other promotional items. Its key component is the stakes schedule which allows users to access to past performances for a least one stakes race on the weekend.
7) Brisnet.com. A simple site that provides handicapping information on a membership basis. I include it here as it has a "Race of the Day" contest where it provides free past performances that you can handicap and then make your selection for the contest. Currently it is running a contest whereby you get one entry for each "race of the day" selection you make. The winner gets tickets to the Kentucky Derby in May of 2010.
8) Horsehats.com. This is an E commerce site that has a terrific offering of all kinds of great gifts for the horse lover you know. It has links to all kinds of horse products too. I include it here because it has an important element for all handicappers; an exotics calculator. You just plug in your picks and it shows how much the ticket will cost. This is especially important when you are putting together complex ten cent superfecta tickets.
9) Espn.com. You will need to mouse over "All Sports" for the drop down menu, then click "horseracing". News is more or less a rehash from other sites, but they do have some very good columnists that can offer valuable insight. Links to other sites and wagering platforms are also there. They have poor updating tendencies.
10) CBSsportsline.com. You have to mouse over the "more" button for the drop down menu, then click "horse racing". Does have a message board where you can talk horse racing with other fans. It has a few links to other sites. It seems as though the sport is an after thought for them.
When you have time please noodle around any or all of these sites. I am sure you will find them both informative and enjoyable.

Learning Algebra With Algebra DVDs
Learning algebra can be a challenge. Many students are confused by x and y variables. Add the distractions of a classroom, and you have one frustrated student. But these difficulties can be overcome with the use of algebra DVDs, which allow students to work at their own pace.
Many adults going into second careers in health fields also need to brush up on their algebra, and DVDs are a helpful and time saving way to review.
Before you spend money on a DVD, though, there are some things to think about. The student should have a real commitment to learning. Without that, no DVD can help. Make sure your student understands that he or she will have to make an honest effort.
Then, find out all you can about the DVD you plan to buy. How does it approach the subject? If it's disorganized or unclear, it won't be much help. It should also be comprehensive, covering functions, algebraic properties, and linear equations.
Read all the available descriptions carefully to make sure it has the content you desire.
The DVD should proceed step by step, and build on previous knowledge. It should encourage students to write everything down. It should encourage students to be neat, since this will prevent a lot of mistakes. It should teach students how to read problems carefully. And it should provide plenty of practice problems.
The DVD should be a supplement to the student's algebra class. Carefully studying both the DVD and the classwork is the best way to learn.
Well-made algebra DVDs can help students master those essential algebra skills
